Letters From a Friend

A letter is mailed on a rainy day
to a friend who always asks,
“Are you doing well?”
expecting nothing is wrong
imagining warm fires, minty grins
As if it never rains where they sit writing
There are no drafts under their doors, no unfinished thoughts.
And though you want to tell them
everything that is wrong.
Everything that falls down and cries.
You just sigh.
You just say “Yes”
